Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care will be holding a fundraising event Sept. 21, aimed specifically at commemorating and honoring the 1,000 patients the agency has served over the past year.

"Night of a Thousand Lights is a community event to commemorate the patients we have served, but it is also to honor their family caregivers, who have become part of the Mountain Valley Hospice family," said Melissa Hiatt, Director of Development for Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care. "This event will let families reunite with their hospice team, and also interact with other families who have shared in the hospice experience."

Night of a Thousand Lights will get under way at 4 p.m. at the Edward Jones Amphitheatre, at Fisher River Park in Dobson, running until 9 p.m. High Point-area television personality Chad Tucker will be the emcee for the event.

"We'll start off in the late afternoon with a variety of activities for the entire family, including live music, and refreshments. Then, after dark, we will celebrate the memories of lost loved ones by lighting a luminary bag for every patient served by Mountain Valley Hospice from September 2018 through September 2019," said Hiatt.

Fund raising events such as Night of a Thousand Lights help Mountain Valley Hospice sustain its mission to provide "compassionate, professional, end-of-life-care," and to provide ancillary services such as We Honor Veterans, Camp Kid's Path, and Bereavement Care, the group said in announcing the event.

"In order to raise funds, we'll hold both live and silent auctions featuring lots of wonderful items, including custom rocking chairs that have been hand decorated by local friends and craftsmen. Our goal is to raise $50,000," said Hiatt.

The community can help Mountain Valley Hospice reach that goal in several ways:

  • Purchase luminaries, at $10 each, to honor the memory of a loved one
  • Volunteer to help serve at the event
  • Become a sponsor of the event
  • Create a team to sell luminaries

"Night of a Thousand Lights is not that far off, so we encourage sponsors and volunteers to get in touch with us right away, in order to help ensure a successful event," said Hiatt. "This is an opportunity for the entire community to come together on one evening to celebrate and honor patients and families who have been served by Mountain Valley Hospice."
